SLC AT A GLANCE: This Week on Campus
October Study Days are upon us, Sarah Lawrence, which means one last week of events to get in before break. Check out what’s going on below:
Monday, October 13 begins with an Open House at Sarah Lawrence College for Prospective Students across campus. Events will include an Early Bird Tour, Classroom Visiting and a Financial Aid Session. Students are invited to speak to visitors to speak about their personal experiences at SLC.
SLAC Traditions will be hosting their annual Spelling Bee in Miller Lecture Hall from 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Come test your skills and you could win a prize!
In Bates Meeting Room from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m., on Tuesday, October 14, Career Services will host a My Money Workshop. Guest speaker Dick Yaffa will be speaking on financial questions that every student has following graduation, especially with today’s economic climate, from creating a budget to signing up for a credit card to evaluating a job offer.
Also being held from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. on Tuesday, in Miller Lecture Hall, is a screening of Villa Diodati - A Chamber Opera with Music & Libretto by Mira J. Spektor, a Sarah Lawrence graduate. A Q&A will follow the screening.
On Wednesday, October 15, Career Services will be hosting a Career Service Workshop. Career Services will teach students to navigate SLC’s Online Job & Internship Database including how to update their profile, access supportive materials and how to final local and national opportunities. The event will be held in Bates Meeting Room from 2:00 -3:00 p.m. RSVP preferred; email careerservices@slc.edu to save your spot!
At 9 p.m. on Wednesday and Saturday, October 18, SLAC Film Series, in collaboration with DAPS, will be screening My Brooklyn. Director Kelly Anderson presents a documentary about her personal journey, as a Brooklyn “gentrifier,” to understand the forces reshaping her neighborhood along lines of race and class. Free popcorn will be provided!
On Thursday, October 16, the American Sign Language Club and Scandal Revue are holding their weekly meetings. Want to learn ASL? How about a burlesque routine? Check out these clubs at their respective locations at Andrews House 103 from 5:30 – 7:00 p.m. and at Performing Arts Center Small Dance Studio from 7:00 – 10:00 p.m.
Also on Thursday, a new publication on campus, Fictional Anatomy, is holding an Information Session and Discussion at 5:30 p.m. in the North Room of the Pub. The magazine is dedicated to the search for significance in contemporary life and stands against the erasure of technological and internet realities from today's literary and visual art forms. Get to know Fictional Anatomy, discuss your own experiences, enjoy free food, and learn about submitting!
Feeling in a game kind of mood? Get ready to participate in SLC’s Trivia Quiz! Test your knowledge answering 50 questions on current affairs, music, literature, and more! Join your fellow students from 6:00 – 8:00 p.m. in Library Pillow Room.
In Miller Lecture Hall on Friday, October 17 from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m., bestselling author Rick Perlstein hosts The Invisible Bridge The Fall of Nixon and the Rise of Reagan. Perlstein asks the question, “What does it mean to believe in America?” as he traces our country’s history from Richard Nixon declaring the end of the Vietnam War in January 1973 to the Arab oil embargo to Ronald Reagan’s succession of the presidency from Jimmy Carter.
The first of two Friends of the Library events will be held in Marshall Field Room 3 from 1:30 – 3:00 p.m. Professor of Russian & Russian & Comparative Literature will be leading a discussion of the 20th century Russian Novel, The Master and Margarita. Those who plan on attending are encouraged to read Part One before the first meeting. The Burgin/O’Connor translation (Vintage Books) will be used.
Looking for an internship or job off-campus? Students are invited to participate at RECRUIT WESTCHESTER, a collaborative Job and Internship Fair at the Westchester Hilton in Rye Brooke from 2:00 – 6:00 p.m. Students can explore full-time/part-time opportunities with local employers. Free van transportation is provided and will leave at 1:30 p.m. sharp from Andrew’s Parking Lot. Saturday is a busy day full events as Fall at Sarah Lawrence Alumni. The day kicks off with a Alumni/Student Brunch at Bates from 11 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. Following in Slonim Stone Room, from 1:30 p.m. – 3:45 is a Tricky and Terrifying Frost: Seminar with Neil Arditi (Literature Faculty). To conclude the day from 4:00 – 6:00 p.m. in Campbell Sports Center is the SLC Women’s Volleyball Game. SLC students are invited to join the alumni in showing some Gryphon Spirit as our volleyball team takes on Mount Saint Mary’s!
